Keeping your hairstyle fresh is one of the best ways to renew how you’re seeing yourself and how others see you. Your cut and color are with you wherever you go and can add style whether you’re in a business suit or jeans and a tee. One of the first elements I address with my clients is to update their ‘do’ because it’s easy to get stuck in a hairstyle rut. Styles are constantly changing and even if you don’t want a complete hair reinvention, there are a number of ways you can modernize your coiffeur without going for a completely different look.
I’ve had a similar hairstyle/color for the last 20 years because I’ve found the right formula for the shape of my face and my coloring. However, every year my hairstylist, Gohar and I take a fresh look at it and make some subtle changes. This year, I’m growing it out a bit and have toned down the blonde to mix with my natural hair color.
Simple Changes To Update Your Hairstyle
Changing Your Part:
Center parts are a great way to complement casual fashions and deep side parts create a look of glamour and sophistication. It’s important to consider the shape of your face before selecting a part. If your face is long, avoid a center part which adds length and draws emphasis to the nose. Women with round faces should avoid deep side parts that make the face appear wider and rounder. If you want something a bit edgier, go with a zig-zag part for fun. A change in your part is an incredibly simple update that can be changed back easily if you don’t like it and it can dramatically change the look of your hair.
Try Bangs:
An easy way to alter your style big-time is to try bangs. Long wispy bangs are a great option if you want a style that is low maintenance and easy to grow out. If you’re really ready to step out of the box you can try the long blunt bangs that fall just above the eyelashes. Side swept bangs are a great alternative giving you the benefit of bangs with easy upkeep.
Accessorize to Maximize:
There are tons of stylish and affordable hair accessories that can be varied depending on the occasion, time of day and desired look. Headbands are sophisticated and elegant. Skinny bands in classic colors are subtle and terrific when you’re growing your hair out (I should know). Jeweled hair brooches are another option for a more daring, trendy look. Hair scarves and ‘turbands’ are really hot this spring, too.
High or Low-lights:
You may not be ready to make a drastic color change, but could achieve a more subtle transition by adding high or lowlights to your hair. Keep your color palette in mind as you choose the hue. Winters and Summers should opt for cooler tones like ash and champagne, whereas Springs and Autumns can go with auburn, gold and strawberry.
If you’re looking for a totally fresh look it’s simple to make a choice that compliments your unique beauty. First, determine the shape of your face- round, heart-shaped, oval, square, rectangular? What length do you want- short, medium, long? Then use our favorite friend, Google. Type in “medium length hairstyles for a heart-shaped face”. A number of photographs will pop up. Keeping your age in mind, choose 5 or 6 of your favorites and show to your hair stylist. He/she will be able to tell you if the style you want works with the texture, curl (or lack of) and thickness of your hair.
By using current trends to update your hairstyle, you can be sure to maintain your individual style while projecting a contemporary edge. Keeping your look current reflects that you stay current, period. Its reflection on your personal brand is that you’re ‘with it’ and keeping up-to-speed on everything from your hair to your technology to your field of expertise. Get it?
It’s fun to watch hairstyle trends on celebrities, too. Which celebrity has your favorite coif and what do you love about it?
