If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for ways to simplify your life. That includes your wardrobe. Do you ever stand in your closet feeling overwhelmed by the volume of clothes? Not even remembering half of what you own? Wishing for a structure you could apply that would streamline getting dressed? Wanting to show up to your work events feeling so confident that your focus is on making the right business connections rather than whether your skirt is too tight or your jacket doesn’t fit quite right.
The sad truth is that it’s commonplace for women to skip events for the sole reason that they don’t have something to wear. I hear about it all the time. Let’s fix that!
Having a well-rounded wardrobe is not about having a lot of clothes, it’s about having the right clothes. Keeping in mind that classic pieces NEVER go out of style, here are 4 Key Pieces that will round out your work wardrobe:
1. A classic blazer-Fashion designer Karen Kane believes that the blazer is the most essential element in a woman’s wardrobe and I happen to agree. This versatile piece can be paired with slacks or a pencil skirt for workwear or with leather accented jeans, boots and the right statement accessory for a night on the town. Choosing one in a wrinkle resistant fabric makes it the perfect travel companion, too.
Although black is often thought of as the best neutral hue, it may not be right for you. Base your neutral hue on your Color Season (Not sure what yours is? Try my Color Rx Mobile App). Springs should opt for camel or medium brown. Charcoal gray for Summers. Rich chocolate brown for Autumns. Black is best for Winters.
2. Classic POP of Color– This flattering blouse by BOSS is made from a viscose blend with a hint of stretch for comfort. The soft and feminine bateau neckline and a peplum waist work well with or without a blazer. Notice how the darts at the front and back ensure the perfect fit. I especially love the ability to dress this one up or down depending on how you pair and accessorize.
Why color? Color is the most powerful element we have in our wardrobe and can command a room. Think of it as nectar to the business bees! This cobalt blue is gorgeous for Summers and Winters. Springs and Autumns can take advantage of coral- a HOT hue for Spring/Summer season.
3. Ankle Dress Pant– A suit style ankle length pant in your neutral hue, is sleek, clean, sophisticated and flawless. Add this easily coordinating work ready staple to your pant rotation when paired with your blazer and pointed pumps or a soft, colorful blouse and peep toe heels. Be sure to hem them at the thinnest part of your ankle to elongate your legs. Remember that FIT is crucial to a polished look.
Petite (5’2″ and under) women should stick with a tapered leg (pictured) and avoid thick or chunky shoes. To elongate the leg even more, pair with nude shoes.
4. Pencil or A-line Skirt-Beautifully tailored skirts are a necessity for every business wardrobe. A multi-season soft gabardine looks refined, has plenty of stretch, and is wrinkle-resistant. If your Body Silhouette is a curvy one, opt for a slight A-line over the straight pencil skirt. The ideal hemline for business is just above the knee.
Think of these 4 pieces as your investment pieces that will treat you well and last for years. In other words… don’t skimp or settle. Choose quality cuts and fabrics that don’t wrinkle. Wrinkle Test: Squeeze the fabric in your fist for 15 seconds. If the item is wrinkled, that’s exactly what it will look like once you’ve worn it that long.
Is it time for you to refresh any of these pieces in YOUR wardrobe? Be sure you choose items you’ll be excited to wear to your next business event. Your confidence will show!
