In the middle of a dark movie theater I surreptitiously wiggled out of my bra. No, it’s not what you may be thinking. The underwire was cutting into my ribs and I was so uncomfortable I wanted to scream. When I finally got it off there was a moment of AHHHHHHHH. You know the one I’m talking about. That feeling you get at the end of the day and ‘the girls’ are set free. Thank goodness the weather was cool because I had a jacket I could zip up once the movie was over, the lights came up and we made our way to the car. There was NOOOOOO way I was putting that sucker back on.
The very next morning I jumped into my Mini Cooper and headed to Nordstrom (The Happiest Place on Earth) for a bra fitting. It seemed ALL of my bras were getting too tight and it was time for the annual professional re-measure! Sure enough, I had became one of the 80% of women who was wearing the wrong bra size. We remedied that very quickly!
In the dressing room my fitter Rosie reminded me the two most important reasons a woman’s bra SHOULD fit properly.
- Health. When we wear an ill-fitting bra, the support shifts from the band (which is where is should come from) to our shoulders, causing shoulder and neck pain. If the cup size is too small, it prevents proper blood flow and circulation. Some doctors tell us to take our bras off as often as possible for health reasons. My husband would agree. 🙂
- Creates a Waistline. Wearing the right bra can make you look pounds thinner. When wearing an unsupportive bra, our breasts sag- adding to our waistline. A band or cup that is too small creates bulges. Wouldn’t want that now would we?
As you jump in your car and make way to your fitting, be sure you are working with someone who has been trained professionally. My picks are Nordstrom and Soma. Do YOU have a pick? Where would YOU go?
